The journey from application to certificate typically takes 9 to 14 months, provided there are no oppositions.

  • Application Submission: Filing Form No. 6 (for individuals) or No. 7 (for firms) along with specimens of the mark.
  • Preliminary Examination: DOI examiners check for distinctiveness and ensure the mark does not hurt national interest or public morality.
  • Publication in IP Bulletin: If accepted, the mark is published in the Industrial Property Bulletin. This is a public notice inviting objections.
  • Registration & Certification: If no opposition is filed within 90 days of publication, the DOI issues the Certificate of Registration upon payment of the final fees.

Duration: A trademark is valid for 7 years from the date of registration and can be renewed indefinitely for 7-year periods.

The Procedure
