Process of Applying NRN Citizenship in Nepal

1. Introduction of Non-residential Nepalese

A person who has acquired the citizenship of a foreign country and resides in another country acquired the citizenship of a foreign country despite of being a citizen of Nepal by descent or birth, has the right to economic, social and cultural rights.

Non-resident Nepali citizens can get Nepali citizenship to enjoy their economic, social and cultural rights.

For applying NRN Citizenship, applicant mandatorily prove that their ancestors’ father, mother, grandfather are citizenship of Nepal and applicant on later phase got the foreign country citizenship status other than that of SAARC counties.

2. Governing Law :

Section 7(a) of the Nepal Citizenship Act 2063 provides for non-residential Nepalese citizenship.

3. Process of applying Non-residential Nepalese NRN Citizenship

NRN Citizenship can be acquire by two ways:

A. District Administration Office/Chief District Officer (CDO)

B. Nepali Embassy or Consulate office in foreign countries:

Note:

  • Embassies and Consulate Office are not accepting an application in the foreign countries.
  • CDO office of different districts are instructing to come with the ward office recommendation for verification that applicant is of Nepali Origin.  

4. Required Documents for applying Nepalese Citizenship

  1. Recommendation of the ward office to provide NRN Citizenship
  2. Form of commitment of CDO office complying with Constitution and Laws of Nepal
  3. Applicant Farther/mother/grandfather citizenship
  4. Relinquishment Certificate of Nepalese Citizenship if necessary
  5. Evidence for residing other member country other than South Asian countries
  6. Current resident’s country passport
  7. Witness to verify in the CDO office

5. Time for receiving the NRN Citizenship:

CDO office shall provide the NRN citizenship within 12 to 15 days if applicant is physically present for applying.
